Welcome & Introduction

This month, we are pleased to share our PERCEPTION support module.

One might ask, what are the barriers to progress? It is not always money, technology, or training! Often, it is perception and the lack of it.

Many businesses have been based on an idea that developed from a short conversation. Tuning in to what people are saying and doing, leads to hearing them express needs and wants. As a result, opportunities can be perceived. Great examples jump from the pages of history. Jesse Boot perceived an opportunity to grow his small herbs business into a national chain of Boots stores across the UK. Beulah Henry had secured 49 patents by the time she was 25, for an innovative vacuum ice cream freezer. Nicknamed ‘Lady Edison’, she had an intuitive perception about what worked well and what didn’t, and ended up developing over 101 inventions!

At the heart of every solution is the need to have clear and accurate perceptions. This starts by asking the right questions, gathering relevant data and making decisions, based upon sound diagnosis. How effective are you?

Perception is a central concept in psychology. Education needs to be as much about the diagnosis as it is about the enquiry. Problem solving is about having the right theory to interpret the facts. The Margerison Communication and Problem Solving Resource provides the framework for both. It is valuable for students and people in professional and business work situations. Gaining the facts is one thing. Perceiving what they mean and using them effectively is another.
